NORSE FERRY TALES 2006-2007 curated by Anders Tomren and Juha van Ingen
Taking a ferry across a fjord in Western Norway is a necessity when travelling from A to B. It is much more than a temporary switch in transport systems for most people. For locals it is a time to meetfriends and exchange news, enjoy a cup of coffee. For tourists it is an exciting voyage across the deep waters midst of spectacular hills. For everyone it is an experience with a certain starting point, duration and an end. Crossing those ancient waterways which nurtured the seafaring people of the past can give a feeling beyond a mere ferry ride. The exodus of a contemporary traveller can sound a bit less exciting than those of the ancient Vikings but on the personal level the impact of the journey can be equally significant. The feeling of leaving the shore is different for somebody eager to get to the other side from someone who is leaving something dear behind. What is waiting on the other side? What was it you left behind? Everyone has a story to tell and reasons to cross the fjord. So have artists invited to take a ferry ride and tell their story to the passengers. The works placed on ferries and piers deliver a time based art experience to the hundreds of passengers who travel by ferries during the Norse Ferry Tales.
Norse Ferry Tales was curated by artists Anders Tomren and Juha van Ingen, with a support of the Nordic Artist’s Centre in Dale. More than twelve works of contemporary art and design were installed on public ferries and connecting piers in Sogn & Fjordane County in Norway.
Participating artists: Anders Tomren, Norway Frans Jacobi, Denmark Finnbogi Petursson, Iceland Hanne Tyrmi, Norway Ion Sørvin N 55, Denmark Juha van Ingen. Finland Nina Rantala, Finland Ole Martin Lund Bø, Norway
